On 11 August 2019 we were joined at our Holy Communion by members Ngati Hinemihi tribe of Maoris, who were on a tour of this country. Before the service they paid homage at the grave of Maggie Papakura.
At the end of the service they sang, in harmony, “Be Thou My Vision” in their native language – a most moving experience for us all.
After tea and cake at Barnside the leader gave an account of their discussions with the National Trust over the replacement of their sacred meeting place, which had been destroyed in the serious fire at Clandon House, Surrey. The group them performed a traditional Maori ritual.
