Thomas Franklin – 1918

A soldier’s letter from the Front

Thomas Franklin was born at Oddington on 1893, the son of William and Sarah Franklin. Like many of the young men of the village, he answered the call to arms in the First World War.

On 15th March 1918 Thomas wrote from France to his niece, Maud Franklin, who lived with her parents at The George and Dragon public house at Charlton-on-Otmoor. He seemed to be in good spirits and spoke of looking forward to going on long cycle rides with Maud when he returned on leave.

On 16 June 1918 Thomas was killed in action.

Another son of William and Sarah, James, was also killed in action. He was born at Noke in 1893.
