The Oxford Journal of 24 April 1773 reported that, at the General Quarter Sessions held this week for the county, John Young, late of Oddington upon Otmore, was found guilty of uttering fake and counterfeit guineas, and was sentenced to suffer six months imprisonment in our Castle, and find sufficient security for his good behaviour for six months afterwards. We are told that Young flattered himself he should escape punishment by having been so witty as to treat with a person of whom he had bought a horse, for so many of those things, carefully avoiding to call them Guineas.

Otmoor is one of our country’s great treasures. A unique habitat of rare wetland and grazing floodplain in landlocked Oxfordshire, home to 1,000 acres of nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, uncrossed by any road since Roman times. Thousands of visitors enjoy its special feeling of remoteness, sharing this ancient fen with over sixty rare and protected species.
Now our government is planning a major new road that could threaten this unique environment.
